eMC RNIB Accessibility Service
The eMC RNIB accessibility service ensures that Pharma fulfil their requirements that partially sighted or blind people have access to patient information leaflets.
European Directive 2004/27/EC, Article 56a, states that Pharma companies must make Patient Information Leaflets (PILs) available in formats suitable for blind or visually impaired people. This embraces providing PILs in hardcopy large print, Braille and audio formats.
The eMC RNIB Accessibility Service (X-PIL) gives pharmaceutical companies a flexible, quick and cost-effective way of meeting those requirements; PILs that are included on eMC are converted into a standard digitised structure (the X-PIL) which is then made available in various formats:
Via the web – X-PILs are available through the eMC website where they can be viewed, or listened to using screen reader software.
Via phone and hard-copy (inc. braille) – Through a partnership between Datapharm and the Royal National Institute for Blind People (RNIB), the PILs can be ordered in large print, Braille, audio CD or listened to via the free RNIB Medicine Leaflet Line.
Pharma companies simply upload PILs to the eMC and Datapharm take care of the rest.
