X-PIL - Patient Information Leaflets for blind or visually impaired people

Overview

The X-PIL service was launched in 2006 and gives access to Patient Information Leaflets (PILs) specifically created for people with sight problems. X-PILs are available on the eMC website where they can be viewed and listened to using screen reader software. Through a partnership between Datapharm and the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), the Patient Information Leaflets (PILs) can be ordered in large print, Braille, audio CD or listened to via the Medicine Leaflet Line (0800 198 5000).

Legislation

The X-PIL service gives pharmaceutical companies a flexible, quick and cost-effective way of meeting the requirements specified in the Directive 2004/27/EC, Article 56a, that requires Patient Information Leaflets (PILs) to be provided in formats suitable for blind or visually impaired people. This includes providing PILs in hardcopy large print, Braille and audio formats.

Partners

Datapharm publishes X-PILs on the eMC website where it provides access to up-to-date, approved and regulated prescribing information for licensed medicines. We work in partnership with the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), who provide a telephone ordering and delivery service so that patients and carers can obtain Braille, large print and audio CD versions of the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) or listen to them over the telephone.
