X-PIL - Patient Information Leaflets for blind or visually impaired people

Overview

The X-PIL service gives people with sight problems access to Patient Information leaflets (PILs). The X-PIL website allows people to view and print PILs in large font and listen to them using screen reader software. Through a partnership between Datapharm and the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), people can get PILs in hardcopy large print, Braille or on audio CD-ROM. They can also listen to them over the telephone.

Legislation

The X-PIL service gives pharmaceutical companies a flexible, quick and cost-effective way of meeting the new legislation - Directive 2004/27/EC, Article 56a - that requires Patient Information Leaflets (PILs) to be provided in formats suitable for blind or visually impaired people. This includes providing PILs in hardcopy large print, Braille and audio CD-ROM formats.

Partners

Datapharm owns the X-PIL website. We work in partnership with the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), who provide a telephone ordering and delivery service so that patients and carers can obtain Braille, large print and audio CD-ROM versions of the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) or listen to them over the telephone.
